Mindfulness Practice with Chanting and Breathing

Mindfulness Practice with Chanting and Breathing

These guided practices are a traditional interpretation of Patanjali's Yogasutra aphorisms on establishing samāpatti (habituated engrossment) in āsana practice. Breathing and quietening of mind are brought about by clearly defining the contemplation. Both primordial sound currents from Oṃ chanting and meditation bowls are used as aids to engrossment. In these classes, His Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda shows how the traditional practice of mindfulness can be developed through synchronized breathwork, albeit combined with neuro-muscular relaxation effected by Oṃ sound. Attainment of stillness by establishing the calmness of ananta samāpatti (engrossment in emptiness) can be brought about through stepwise relaxation of musculature and body parts or by listening to Oṃ tuned to appropriate frequency. Furthermore, listening to Oṃ sound or practicing So-haṃ rumination are shown here to be effective for establishing both kinds of engrossment: in emptiness or godliness. The Iśwara samāpatti (engrossment in godliness) invokes chanting the Oṃ and listening to the Oṃ, instead of stepwise relaxation of the musculature.
